Britney Spears completes $200m music rights sale
Pop icon Britney Spears has finalized the sale of her entire music catalogue to independent publisher Primary Wave, the BBC reported on Wednesday. The deal, struck on 30 December, is valued at approximately $200 million (£146 million).
Silence from parties involved
Neither Primary Wave nor representatives for Spears have commented on the transaction. The company, known for acquiring rights to legendary artists, has not responded to BBC inquiries.
Spears' musical legacy
The 44-year-old singer, whose career spans over two decades, is celebrated for global hits including ...Baby One More Time, Oops!... I Did It Again, Toxic, and Gimme More. Spears ranks among the best-selling female artists, with over 150 million records sold worldwide since her 1999 debut.
Industry shift toward catalogue sales
Spears joins a growing list of high-profile musicians monetizing their back catalogues. Bruce Springsteen sold his rights to Sony for $500 million in 2021, while Justin Bieber reportedly inked a $200 million deal with Hipgnosis Songs Capital in 2023. Primary Wave, founded by music executive Lawrence Mestel, has also secured rights to the estates of Notorious B.I.G., Prince, and Whitney Houston.
Personal struggles and new beginnings
The sale follows a turbulent period for Spears, who in 2021 ended a 13-year conservatorship that granted her father control over her finances and personal decisions. Her 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, detailed the challenges she faced during that time. Spears previously stated in January 2024 that she would "never return to the music industry," with her last release being a 2022 duet with Elton John.
Ex-husband's memoir adds context
Kevin Federline, Spears' former spouse, released his own memoir, You Thought You Knew, in late 2025, offering another perspective on their relationship and the events surrounding her conservatorship.
