Singer enters treatment facility voluntarily

Pop star Britney Spears has checked into a rehabilitation center, her representative confirmed to U.S. media outlets on Sunday. The move comes less than a month after her arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Timeline of recent events

Spears was taken into custody on March 4 after California Highway Patrol reported her driving a BMW at high speed in an erratic manner. Officers noted signs of impairment, and she underwent field sobriety tests at the scene.

Three weeks before her scheduled court appearance on April 28, the 44-year-old has now sought professional help. The hearing will address the DUI charge filed in California.

Family and team respond

Following her arrest, Spears' representative called the incident "completely inexcusable" and emphasized that her loved ones would develop a "long-overdue plan" to support her well-being.

"Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in the long-overdue change that needs to occur in her life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time."

Her two sons will spend time with her during this period, according to the statement.

Background on Spears' legal and personal struggles

Spears rose to global fame in the late 1990s with hits like Baby One More Time, Toxic, and Gimme More. Her career was later overshadowed by a 13-year conservatorship, which ended in 2021.

During the conservatorship, her father, Jamie Spears, managed her finances and personal decisions, citing her "physical, emotional, mental, and financial distress." He later stated that the arrangement had helped her regain stability and that it was time for her to "re-take control of her life."

What's next

Spears' legal team has not disclosed the duration of her stay in rehab. Her court date remains set for April 28, where she will face the DUI charge.
