Pop star detained after erratic driving incident

Britney Spears was arrested late Wednesday in California on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, authorities confirmed. The 42-year-old singer was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) at approximately 9:30 p.m. local time (5:30 a.m. GMT Thursday) after being reported for reckless driving on a freeway.

Circumstances of the arrest

CHP officers stated Spears was driving her black BMW 430i southbound on U.S. Highway 101 when they observed her vehicle moving at high speed and swerving. Upon stopping her, officers noted signs of impairment and conducted field sobriety tests at the scene.

Following standard procedure, Spears was taken to a medical facility for blood tests before being booked into custody. She was released from Ventura County jail in the early hours of Thursday morning, according to official records, which also listed her occupation as "celebrity." Her vehicle was impounded as part of the investigation.

Statement from Spears' representative

"This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and we hope this can be the first step in long-overdue change that needs to occur in her life. She will get the help and support she needs during this difficult time."

The representative added that Spears' two sons would spend time with her and that her family was developing a plan to support her well-being moving forward.

Next steps and ongoing investigation

Spears is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on May 4. CHP confirmed the case remains under investigation, with results from chemical tests still pending. Authorities clarified that Spears was not hospitalized after the arrest but was briefly taken to a medical center solely for the purpose of administering the required tests.

Spears' recent public presence

On Thursday, as news of the arrest spread, Spears appeared to have deleted her Instagram account. The move follows a turbulent period in which she has publicly distanced herself from the music industry. In January 2024, she declared she would "never return to the music industry," though she had previously hinted at potential live performances in the U.K. and Australia in a since-deleted social media post.

Spears' last musical release was a 2022 duet with Elton John. Her career spans decades, with iconic hits such as Baby One More Time, Toxic, and Gimme More cementing her status as one of pop music's most influential figures.

Personal and legal history

Spears' personal life has been closely scrutinized, particularly during the 13-year conservatorship that ended in 2021. Under the arrangement, her father controlled her finances and personal decisions. In her 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, Spears detailed the challenges she faced during that period and reflected on her career.

Her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, released his own memoir, You Thought You Knew, in late 2025, adding another layer to the public narrative surrounding Spears' life.
