Fatal fall on Balaitús Peak
A 42-year-old British woman died on Saturday after plunging approximately 500 meters (1,640 feet) while descending Balaitús Peak in Spain's Huesca region, near the French border.
Rescue operation and investigation
Emergency services received the alert at 19:30 local time (18:30 BST). The woman, who resided in Finland, was declared dead at the scene. Her 53-year-old companion, who was uninjured, was with her during the descent along the Gran Diagonal route, according to Spanish outlet El País.
The Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (GREIM) and the Huesca Air Unit responded to the incident. Her body was transported to Zaragoza's Forensic Medicine Institute for an autopsy.
The Civil Guard confirmed an investigation is underway, with findings to be submitted to a local court alongside post-mortem results. Authorities are treating the death as a tragic accident.

A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office stated:
"We are aware of a British woman who has died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities."
Recent rescue surge prompts safety warnings
The incident follows a spike in mountain rescues in the Pyrenees. Between 26 and 30 May, GREIM teams conducted nine operations in the region.
On Monday, the Civil Guard urged hikers to prioritize safety, advising them to carry sufficient water, ensure electronic devices are charged with location services enabled, use sun protection, and verify routes and weather conditions before setting out.
