British couple describe 'huge culture shock' after Taliban release

Peter Reynolds, 80, and his wife Barbie, 76, spent seven and a half months in Taliban custody in Afghanistan before their release in September. The couple, who ran a charity in the country for nearly 20 years, said their return to the UK has been disorienting after years of living under strict restrictions.

Detention without explanation

The Reynolds were arrested on 1 February 2025 during a chartered flight from Kabul to Bamiyan province, along with a friend and their translator, who were later freed. The Taliban claimed the couple had violated Afghan laws but never disclosed the specific charges or reasons for their detention.

Peter described the ordeal as a "complete mystery," while Barbie said they were never informed why they were held or why they were eventually released through Qatari mediation.

Harsh prison conditions

The couple recounted being moved between 10 different prisons, including Pul-e-Charkhi, a high-security facility outside Kabul known for housing dangerous criminals. At one point, they were confined to windowless basement cells for two months.

Barbie shared a block with 240 women and described overcrowded, unsanitary conditions: "There were about seven toilets for that many people. The showers broke repeatedly, and drains constantly overflowed."

During Ramadan, she received one meal a day, and afterward, the same amount of food was split between lunch and dinner. She developed severe malnutrition and anemia, leaving her too weak to walk unaided.

"I became very malnourished... Peter said I aged 20 years when he next saw me."

Contrasting accounts of treatment

Taliban officials insisted the couple received proper medical care and had their human rights respected. However, Peter described the moment he reunited with Barbie after months apart as shocking, saying she appeared "in her 90s" rather than her actual age of 76.

In their final weeks of detention, conditions improved slightly when they were moved above ground, where they reported better food and kinder treatment.

Life under Taliban restrictions

While living in Bamiyan province, Barbie wore a hijab at all times and was prohibited from going out in public without her husband. She contrasted this with the freedoms in the UK, where "people can wear what they want and go where they want."

The couple, who married in Kabul in 1970, said their experiences have fundamentally changed their perspectives. "What we've been through reshapes you," Barbie told BBC Newsnight.

A message of forgiveness and hope

Despite their ordeal, the Reynolds expressed no bitterness. Peter said he would still like to work with the Afghan government "for the good of the people," and both wished to "hug" those who imprisoned them.

"I'd want them to know I'm not holding a grudge against them."

They also sent a message to Craig and Lindsay Foreman, a British couple detained in Iran since January 2025: "Hang in there, don't lose your hope."
