British couple pronounced dead at Shellharbour beach
Police confirmed that a 66-year-old man and his 64-year-old wife from the UK died on Wednesday after being pulled unconscious from the surf at a New South Wales beach.
Emergency response
Emergency crews were alerted at 11:10 local time (00:10 GMT) following reports that two swimmers were in distress near Shellharbour. Bystanders, including two off-duty nurses and a young man, dragged the couple ashore and immediately began CPR.
Paramedics took over resuscitation efforts, but both victims were declared dead at the scene, New South Wales Police stated.

Lake Illawarra Police District Inspector Luke Geradts described the incident as "tragic" and extended sympathies to the couple's family.
"I want to commend the members of the public who assisted in the initial response. Although the outcome was tragic, their quick actions gave the couple the best possible chance."
