Bondi hero faces assault charges
Ahmed al Ahmed, celebrated for stopping a gunman during December's deadly Bondi Beach attack, has been charged with assaulting his father in March, Australian media reported on Thursday.
Heroic intervention in mass shooting
Footage from the Hanukkah event on 15 December showed Ahmed, 44, wrestling a firearm from one of the alleged attackers. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the struggle. The attack left 15 people dead and dozens injured, marking Australia's deadliest mass shooting since 1996. Police classified the incident as a terrorist act targeting the Jewish community.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited Ahmed in hospital, praising him as "the best of our country." A public fundraiser for his recovery raised over A$2.5 million ($1.7 million; £1.24 million).
Charges and denial
Ahmed faces charges of domestic violence common assault, stalking, and intimidation related to an alleged incident with his father in March. He has denied the accusations, telling ABC the claims were "not true at all."
Court appearance scheduled
Ahmed is due to appear in Sydney's Bankstown Local Court on 29 June. No further details about the alleged assault have been released by authorities.
