Accused gunman faces 59 charges in Bondi Beach massacre
Naveed Akram, 24, made his first court appearance via video link from prison on Monday, nearly two months after he and his father allegedly carried out a deadly attack at a Hanukkah event on Bondi Beach.
Akram faces 59 charges, including 15 counts of murder and one of committing a terrorist act, in what authorities describe as Australia's deadliest mass shooting in nearly three decades.
Brief court appearance amid tight security
Appearing from Goulburn supermax prison, Akram spoke only once during the five-minute hearing, responding with a single word-"Yeah"-when asked if he had heard discussions about extending suppression orders. The orders protect the identities of survivors but allow them to come forward if they choose.
His lawyer, Ben Archbold, told reporters outside the court that it was too early to discuss a plea. "He's doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances," Archbold said, noting the "very onerous conditions" of supermax detention.
When questioned about whether Akram had given a police interview, Archbold stated, "All we've done is start the process. We're waiting for the brief to be served. There's nothing more I can say."
Alleged planning and extremist ties
Court documents released in late December allege that Naveed and his father, Sajid Akram, 50, spent months meticulously planning the attack. The pair reportedly visited Bondi Beach for reconnaissance two days before the shooting.
Police claim footage from the suspects' mobile phones shows them sitting in front of an Islamic State (IS) flag in October, where they discussed their motivations and condemned "the acts of 'Zionists.'" Another video allegedly depicts the father and son conducting firearms training in a rural area of New South Wales, firing shotguns and moving tactically.
Victims and next steps
Among the 15 people killed in the December 14 attack were two rabbis, a Holocaust survivor, and a 10-year-old girl. More than 40 others were injured.
Sajid Akram was shot dead by police at the scene, while Naveed sustained critical injuries before being transferred from hospital to prison. His next court date is scheduled for April.
