BMW introduces humanoid robots at Leipzig plant
BMW will integrate two humanoid robots into its European manufacturing operations this summer, marking the first use of such technology in the region's automotive sector. The robots, developed by Hexagon Robotics, are undergoing final testing at the company's Leipzig factory.
Why humanoid robots?
Unlike traditional robotic arms, humanoid robots can adapt to existing workstations designed for human workers. Michael Nikolaides, BMW's head of process management and digitalization, explained that their human-like dimensions allow seamless integration without costly factory redesigns.
Gartner analyst Bill Ray noted that falling robot costs-now far below the $17 million price tag of earlier models-make retrofitting existing processes more economical than overhauling entire production lines.
Capabilities and training
The Aeon robots stand 1.65 meters tall and weigh 60 kilograms, with a top speed of 2.4 meters per second. They can lift 15 kilograms briefly or 8 kilograms continuously, equipped with 21 sensors including cameras, radar, and force detectors.
Training combined teleoperation-where human movements are recorded via sensors-and reinforcement learning in a digital twin of the factory, powered by Nvidia software. Hexagon Robotics president Arnaud Robert highlighted imitation learning as a breakthrough, reducing training time from months to days by allowing robots to mimic human actions.
Practical applications at BMW
The robots will assist with battery assembly and feeding parts to manufacturing tools. While multi-functional, they won't frequently switch tasks, similar to human workers. Nikolaides emphasized their potential to handle repetitive or physically demanding work while addressing labor shortages.
BMW previously tested Figure O2 robots at its Spartanburg, U.S., plant, where they assembled 30,000 X3 models. Unlike the wheeled Aeon, Figure robots walk, though Nikolaides noted wheels suit factory floors better. BMW has also used Boston Dynamics' Spot robot for maintenance inspections.
Industry trends and challenges
Other automakers are exploring humanoid robots, including Toyota (Agility Robotics' Digit) and Xiaomi, which tested its own models in EV production. Hyundai, a majority owner of Boston Dynamics, plans to deploy Atlas robots alongside its existing Spot units.
Ray cautioned against overestimating current capabilities, citing high-profile demonstrations as often misleading. "Humanoid robots can't run or jump, but people assume they can," he said. Battery life remains a limitation-Aeon operates for three hours before self-swapping its battery in three minutes.
Human-robot collaboration
BMW staff have welcomed the robots, with Nikolaides predicting they'll be given names, as with older machines. Hexagon's Robert noted Aeon's visual communication system, using symbols on its head display to signal tasks or listening mode.
