BJP breaks new ground in Bihar with Choudhary's appointment

A senior leader from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took office as the chief minister of Bihar on Tuesday, marking the first time the party has held the state's top post.

Choudhary succeeds veteran Nitish Kumar

Samrat Choudhary, previously deputy to outgoing chief minister Nitish Kumar, was sworn in following Kumar's resignation. Kumar, a dominant figure in Bihar politics for nearly two decades, stepped down amid health concerns after being elected to India's Upper House of Parliament last month.

Kumar, who frequently shifted political alliances to retain power, governed Bihar for most of the past 20 years. His departure clears the way for Choudhary, who now faces the challenge of leading a state where the BJP has never before formed a government independently.

Choudhary's political journey and background

At 57, Choudhary brings a lengthy political career to the role, having served in multiple parties over three decades. He began his career with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Bihar's primary opposition party, before joining Kumar's Janata Dal (United) in 2014. He later switched to the BJP in 2017, aligning with Kumar's own realignment with the party.

Choudhary hails from a political family; his father, Shakuni Choudhary, served as a Bihar legislator for over 20 years, while his mother, Parvati Devi, was a social activist and former legislator. He is seen as a key leader from the Other Backward Class (OBC) community, which holds significant electoral influence in Bihar's caste-driven politics.

Challenges and expectations in the new role

Choudhary's appointment has drawn mixed reactions. Supporters view it as a strategic move by the BJP to expand its social base in Bihar, while critics question his suitability, noting he lacks deep roots in the party's traditional organizational structure.

As home minister in Kumar's government, Choudhary oversaw Bihar's police force, one of the state's most influential departments. His leadership will now be tested in a state grappling with poverty, mass migration for employment, and a complex political landscape long dominated by Kumar.

"Bihar has changed, and I must acknowledge that and give him [Kumar] due respect... Now Samrat Choudhary is set to become the chief minister. This is a big and historic day,"

BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad

What lies ahead for Bihar

With over 74 million voters, Bihar remains one of India's poorest states, where caste dynamics heavily influence politics. Choudhary's ability to navigate these challenges while consolidating the BJP's position will be closely watched in the coming months.
