AI transforms delivery efficiency at Birmingham haulage company
Mobile People Powered Logistics has slashed missed deliveries by 22% and quadrupled revenue after integrating artificial intelligence into its operations, the firm's managing director revealed.
How AI streamlined daily operations
The Birmingham-based company handles 1,500 shipments daily, ranging from single pallets to full lorry loads. Staff with an interest in technology spearheaded the AI adoption, focusing on improving internal system communication and automating customer notifications.
An AI-driven system now scans delivery details and automatically calls customers an hour before arrival, confirming their order is en route. This innovation has eliminated 400 manual calls per day, allowing employees to concentrate on higher-value tasks.
Impact on productivity and revenue
The automation has reduced rescheduled deliveries-where recipients were unavailable-by 22%. Over time, these efficiencies contributed to a significant revenue increase, from £5 million to £20 million.
"Staff who enjoy tinkering with this sort of stuff drove the change," said Matthew Marriott, the company's managing director. "For us, it's been fantastic, though other sectors may need to wait a few more years for AI to mature further."
High-profile visitors highlight AI's potential
Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Asahi Pompey, global head of Goldman Sachs' Office of Corporate Engagement, toured the firm to observe its AI implementation.
"There's a fantastic opportunity for small businesses to use AI to turbocharge growth," Sunak said. "It's great for them and for the economy."
Pompey emphasised the importance of identifying manual processes as starting points for AI integration, noting that scepticism among small businesses could be overcome by demonstrating tangible benefits.
Future plans and broader implications
Mobile People Powered Logistics aims to further expand its AI use to drive productivity and growth. While some industries may not yet see immediate benefits, Marriott believes AI's capabilities will continue to evolve, making it viable for more sectors in the coming years.
