BBC confirms Scott Mills' departure following misconduct claims
The BBC has ended its contract with radio presenter Scott Mills after allegations regarding his personal conduct emerged. The broadcaster declined to provide further details, stating it does not comment on individual cases.
Abrupt exit from Radio 2 Breakfast Show
Mills, who took over Radio 2's breakfast show from Zoe Ball in January 2025, hosted his final programme on Tuesday, 24 March, with no indication of his impending departure. The following morning, fellow DJ Gary Davies announced he was filling in for Mills.
The Mirror first reported Mills' exit, citing sources who claimed the allegations involved a past relationship. BBC News has sought comment from Mills but received no response at the time of publication.
BBC leadership addresses staff
In an internal email sent on Monday, Lorna Clarke, the BBC's director of music, acknowledged the shockwaves caused by the news. She noted Mills' extensive career across Radio 1, Radio 2, 5 Live, and television, spanning more than 25 years.
"I know that this news will be sudden and unexpected and therefore must come as a shock. Not least as so many of us have worked with Scott over a great many years... I felt it was important to share this news with you at the earliest opportunity."
Lorna Clarke, BBC Director of Music
Clarke added that she would provide updates on the breakfast show's future plans when possible but refrained from further comment.
Colleagues react to the news
During his midday Radio 2 show, Jeremy Vine described himself as "taken aback" by the reports, admitting he had no additional information. Mills, 53, had been a fixture on BBC radio and television, ranking as the corporation's 11th highest-paid star.
Mills' career highlights and future projects
Mills joined Radio 2's weekday lineup in 2022, replacing Steve Wright in the afternoon slot. In 2025, he co-hosted Eurovision semi-final commentary on BBC One with Rylan and made a Comic Relief appearance in a The Traitors sketch.
His previous roles included hosting Radio 1's Official Chart (2018-2022), a weekend show on 5 Live, and a 2014 stint on Strictly Come Dancing. His salary for the 2024-25 financial year was reported as £355,000-£359,999, though his earnings for the breakfast show are expected to be significantly higher.
Mills' Radio 2 Breakfast Show reached 6.5 million listeners in February 2026, its highest audience since his tenure began. He had recently won BBC's Celebrity Race Across The World with his husband, Sam Vaughan, and was set to present a visualised podcast, Race Across the World: The Detour, alongside planned episodes of Pop Top 10 with Rylan.
Charity work and personal life
Mills has served as an ambassador for the MS Society for 11 years, motivated by his mother's and a friend's diagnoses. The charity confirmed his long-standing role but declined further comment. He has also been a patron of Neuroblastoma UK since 2021.
