Batman sequel spotted filming in Liverpool
Gotham City has returned to Liverpool as production crews prepare for The Batman Part II, with police cruisers and yellow cabs seen across the city this week.
Early production activity underway
Vehicles associated with Gotham City-including police cars and iconic yellow taxis-were observed near St George's Hall and the Queensway Tunnel. Sources indicate the activity was part of a technical reconnaissance rather than full-scale filming.
Principal photography is expected to begin next month, though the production team has not officially confirmed shooting locations.
Liverpool's history as Gotham City
The city first transformed into Gotham for the 2020 filming of The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson. The film became a global hit upon its 2022 release.
One of the most memorable scenes from the original production featured Batman descending from the Liver Building, which doubled as the Gotham City Police Department headquarters.
Upcoming sequel and cast details
The Batman Part II, set for release in October 2027, will feature Scarlett Johansson and Charles Dance alongside Pattinson. The sequel follows a lineage of high-profile productions filmed in Liverpool, including Sam Mendes' four-part Beatles biopic and recent TV dramas like Hamburg Days and This City is Ours.
Recent Batman spin-off also filmed in Liverpool
Last year, the city hosted filming for the Batman spin-off Clayface, shot around Liverpool Crown Court in Derby Square. The film is scheduled for release this October.
