England edge past Scotland in Kolkata thriller

England secured a nervy five-wicket victory over Scotland in the T20 World Cup Group C match at Kolkata, keeping their Super 8 hopes alive. Tom Banton's unbeaten 63 proved decisive as England chased down 153 with 10 balls remaining.

Scotland's strong start fades in late collapse

Scotland posted 152 all out after a promising start, with captain Richie Berrington top-scoring with 49 off 32 balls. The Scots were well-placed at 113-3 in the 13th over but lost their last seven wickets for just 39 runs.

Adil Rashid (3-36) and Liam Dawson (2-34) led England's bowling recovery after an expensive opening spell. Jofra Archer claimed two early wickets in the powerplay, including dangerous opener George Munsey.

England's top-order struggles continue

England's chase got off to a disastrous start as Phil Salt (2) and Jos Buttler (3) fell in the first two overs to Scotland's opening bowlers. The hosts found themselves 86-4 when Harry Brook was dismissed for just four runs.

Jacob Bethell's patient 32 provided some stability before Banton took control of the innings. The wicketkeeper-batter scored at just over a run a ball initially before accelerating to finish unbeaten on 63 from 41 deliveries.

Key moments in the chase

  • Banton broke the shackles by hitting spinner Mark Watt for consecutive sixes
  • Sam Curran contributed a vital 28 off 16 balls
  • Will Jacks hit the winning runs with an over to spare

What this result means for both teams

England now need just one win from their remaining group match against Italy on Monday to advance to the Super 8 stage. Scotland's fate hangs in the balance as they face Nepal in their final group game on Tuesday, with other results potentially eliminating them before they take the field.

"We always believed we could chase this down. The bowlers did a great job to restrict them, and Tom played an absolute blinder when we needed it most."

Looking ahead

England remain inconsistent in this tournament, having previously lost to West Indies and scraped past Nepal. Scotland showed admirable fight but were ultimately let down by their middle-order collapse after setting a promising platform.

Both teams will be looking to improve their performances as the tournament progresses, with England needing to find more consistency if they are to challenge for the title.
