Austrian court hears case of alleged Taylor Swift concert bomb plot
A 21-year-old man, identified as Beran A, appeared in a court south of Vienna on Tuesday, facing terrorism charges for allegedly planning a jihadist attack during Taylor Swift's 2024 concerts in the Austrian capital. The plot was foiled after a CIA tip-off, leading to the cancellation of three sold-out shows at Ernst Happl Stadium.
Arrest and charges
Beran A was escorted into the Wiener Neustadt courtroom in handcuffs, wearing a blue shirt. Prosecutors accuse him of membership in a terrorist organization, preparing an attack on Swift's concert, and pledging allegiance to the Islamic State (IS). He is also charged with spreading IS propaganda online, manufacturing explosives, and attempting to illegally purchase weapons, including firearms and a hand grenade.
According to the indictment, Beran A obtained instructions for building a shrapnel bomb, a type commonly used in IS attacks, and received training on handling explosives from other IS members. He allegedly began planning the attack by late July 2024 and was arrested on August 7, one day before Swift's first scheduled performance in Vienna.
Co-defendant and broader plot
Beran A is standing trial alongside another 21-year-old, Arda K, who is accused of being part of the same IS cell. Prosecutors allege the pair planned additional attacks in Mecca, Istanbul, and Dubai. Both men, who were teenagers at the time of the alleged offenses, face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
Last year, a Syrian national, Mohammed A, received an 18-month suspended sentence in Germany for aiding the plot. Prosecutors said he assisted Beran A by translating bomb-making instructions from Arabic and connecting him with an IS member.
Concerts cancelled, fans disappointed
The cancellation of Swift's three Vienna concerts left over 195,000 ticket holders disappointed. Thousands of fans gathered in the city's streets, singing and exchanging friendship bracelets in a show of solidarity. The Eras Tour, which spanned five continents and 149 shows, became the first in history to surpass $1 billion in ticket sales.
Taylor Swift's reaction
Swift learned of the bomb plot while en route to Austria, as revealed in her Disney+ documentary about the Eras Tour. She described the situation as narrowly avoiding a "massacre" and expressed relief that authorities intervened before lives were lost.
"Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating. But I was also so grateful to the authorities because thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives."

In interviews at the documentary's New York premiere, Swift reflected on the newfound fear of threats to her fans after two decades of performing. The tour, which concluded in December 2024, sold over 10.1 million tickets worldwide.
Trial outlook
The trial is expected to continue until late May. Beran A's lawyer, Anna Mair, indicated her client would enter a partial guilty plea.
