Australian reporter apologises for on-air slur
Channel Nine presenter Danika Mason has publicly apologised after a live television segment from the Winter Olympics in Italy drew widespread attention for her slurred speech. The incident sparked reactions from social media users and even Australia's Prime Minister.
What happened during the broadcast
During a live cross to the Today show on Wednesday, Mason appeared visibly impaired as she delivered a sports report. She veered off-topic, mentioning iguanas and the price of coffee, while struggling to articulate her words clearly. At one point, she confused the UK and the US.
Studio host Karl Stefanovic remarked afterward, "Look, the cold weather is a thing, right. You can't actually move your lips." Clips of the segment quickly circulated on social media, prompting a range of responses.
Mason's apology and explanation
Appearing on Today the following morning, Mason addressed the incident directly. "I want to take a moment, if that's OK, just to apologise," she said. "I'm OK, probably just a little embarrassed."
"I totally misjudged the situation. I shouldn't have had a drink, especially in these conditions-it's cold, we've got altitude, and not having had dinner probably didn't help as well. But I want to take full responsibility; it's not the standard I set myself."

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese weighed in on the controversy, describing himself as "pro-Danika" and suggesting the incident was likely due to jet lag. "There's nothing to see here," he said.
Social media responses were divided. Some users defended Mason, with one comment on X stating, "Good on her, nothing wrong with this. You can tell she's having an absolute ball over there." Others were more critical, with one user writing, "If it's not a health issue, she should be sacked on the spot-very unprofessional."
