Fatal fall on Inca Trail claims life of Australian tourist
Matthew Cameron Paton, a 52-year-old police officer from Victoria, Australia, died after plunging 300 meters down a ravine while hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, Peruvian authorities confirmed on Thursday.
Search and recovery efforts
Paton was reported missing on Wednesday after he fell through a broken wooden railing near the "50 Gradas" section of the trail. Members of the High Mountain Rescue Unit in Cusco located his body approximately 984 feet down a steep slope later that day.
Cusco Police Region Chief General Virgilio Velásquez stated that search operations began immediately after receiving reports of the missing hiker. According to Peruvian news outlet Andina, Velásquez suggested Paton likely tripped while crossing a wooden bridge and attempted to grab the railing, which gave way, causing him to fall.
Investigation and next steps
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fall. Paton's body will be transferred to a nearby town for further procedures.

Victoria Police confirmed Paton joined the force in 2009 and was set to begin a new role as senior sergeant next month. Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush praised Paton's 16 years of service, describing him as selfless, kind, and known for his humor and inclusivity.

Family mourns devastating loss
Paton's family released a statement expressing their grief, calling his death "shattering." They highlighted his lifelong dream of visiting Peru and his deep devotion to his wife of 31 years and their three children.

A spokesperson for Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that consular support is being extended to Paton's family. The spokesperson offered condolences, stating, "We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time."
