Slot reflects on Liverpool journey in open letter
Former Liverpool manager Arne Slot has described his time at the club as a "pleasure" in an emotional farewell letter, despite his abrupt dismissal after one season in charge.
Premier League triumph and sudden departure
The 47-year-old Dutch coach led Liverpool to their 20th league title in his debut campaign, securing the championship with four matches remaining. However, the club terminated his contract on Saturday following a fifth-place finish this season, 25 points behind champions Arsenal.
Slot acknowledged the club's high standards in his letter, published in the Liverpool Echo. "I leave Liverpool exactly where it belongs: among Europe's elite," he wrote. "Change is part of football, but this club will continue to make its people proud."
Champions League secured amid challenges
Despite enduring 20 defeats across all competitions, Slot ensured Liverpool's qualification for next season's Champions League. "Securing Champions League football was an important responsibility," he stated, emphasizing the club's ability to compete at the highest level moving forward.
Tributes to fans and fallen teammate
Slot expressed gratitude for the supporters who welcomed him and celebrated the title victory alongside the team. "Having had much of that taken from you in 2020, it was never lost on me how much it mattered that you were part of it all," he noted, referencing the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on fan attendance.
He also paid tribute to the late forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash last summer alongside his brother André Silva. "The love, compassion, and support shown by the Liverpool family was extraordinary," Slot wrote, highlighting the club's unity during the tragedy.
Fan incidents and club values
Slot reflected on the club's trophy parade in May 2025, where fan Paul Doyle drove his car through crowds on Water Street. Doyle was later sentenced to over 21 years in prison for dangerous driving and causing grievous bodily harm. "I was privileged to witness first-hand your spirit of compassion and unity," Slot said, acknowledging the city's resilience during challenging moments.
Succession plans underway
Liverpool are set to begin formal discussions with former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola this week to succeed Slot. The club's hierarchy acted swiftly after the disappointing league finish, marking a dramatic shift from the highs of last season's title win.
"The players who have given so much to this club, who have upheld its values and helped create so many unforgettable moments, have built foundations that will endure."
