Massive winter storm threatens nearly half of US population
Forecasters warn that a dangerous Arctic air mass will sweep across the United States starting Friday, delivering subzero temperatures, heavy snow, and icy conditions to nearly 30 states and affecting approximately 160 million people.
Cold front moves eastward from High Plains
The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts the cold air will originate in the High Plains and Rocky Mountains before advancing eastward. Meteorologists anticipate temperatures will plummet well below freezing in multiple regions, with wind chills potentially dropping below -50°F (-46°C) in the Northern Plains.
A broader area of the southeastern U.S. may also experience subzero wind chills, posing severe risks of hypothermia and frostbite to anyone exposed, the NWS cautioned.
Snow and ice to disrupt travel and infrastructure
Snow showers have already begun affecting areas downwind of the Great Lakes, which span the U.S.-Canada border. The storm system is expected to intensify in Texas and New Mexico before moving east, blanketing major cities such as Memphis, Nashville, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York with snow.
While exact snowfall amounts remain uncertain, some urban areas could receive over 12 inches (30 cm). Southern states may face freezing rain, which could coat trees in ice, leading to potential power outages and tree damage. Reduced visibility and hazardous travel conditions are also anticipated.
States declare emergencies as grid concerns resurface
Governors in Texas, North Carolina, and South Carolina have declared states of emergency, enabling the mobilization of National Guard troops and other emergency responders. Texas Governor Greg Abbott stated that the state is taking proactive measures to ensure residents have necessary resources before the storm hits.
Officials are particularly wary of a repeat of the 2021 winter storm that crippled Texas's energy grid, leaving millions without power for days. Concerns include frozen and burst pipes, as well as prolonged road closures, especially in southern states with limited de-icing equipment.
Canada also braces for winter weather
Canada is experiencing its own cold snap, with eastern and Atlantic regions potentially facing snowfall. Meteorologist Geoff Coulson told CBC News that the full impact remains uncertain, but residents should prepare for challenging conditions.
Cold temperatures to linger into next week
The frigid conditions are expected to persist well into next week, with officials urging residents to stay informed and take precautions against the extreme cold and storm-related hazards.
