Driver faces charges in Nigeria crash that killed boxer's team

Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, appeared in a Nigerian court on Friday, accused of causing the deaths of two members of Anthony Joshua's team in a highway collision earlier this week.

Crash details and casualties

The incident occurred on Monday when the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and his team struck a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Ogun state. Joshua's personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The former heavyweight champion sustained injuries and was hospitalized before being discharged on Wednesday.

Charges and legal proceedings

Kayode faces four charges: causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and operating a vehicle without a valid license, according to police sources.

He was granted bail set at 5,000,000 Naira (approximately £2,578) and remains in custody until the conditions are met. The case has been adjourned until January 20.

Joshua's reaction and tributes

Officials from Ogun and Lagos states described Joshua as "heavy-hearted" over the loss of his close friends. After leaving the hospital, he visited the funeral home where the bodies of Ayodele and Ghami were being prepared for repatriation.

Hours before the crash, Joshua had shared an Instagram video of himself playing table tennis with Ayodele.

"Rest in peace Latz and Sina. Your energy and loyalty among so many other great qualities will be deeply missed. Praying for strength and guidance for all their family, friends and of course AJ during this very difficult time."

Background and context

Joshua, who was born in Watford but has family roots in Sagamu, Ogun state, was traveling to visit relatives for New Year celebrations when the crash occurred. A family member confirmed he had been in Nigeria following his victory over American boxer Jake Paul on December 19.

Paul expressed his condolences on X, writing, "Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today's unfortunate accident."
