Actor Anthony Head passes away at 72
British actor Anthony Head, renowned for his roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ted Lasso, and Merlin, has died following complications from pneumonia, his family announced on Saturday. He was 72.

Head's daughters, Emily and Daisy, shared the news in a statement, describing their father as "extraordinary." They expressed gratitude for the privilege of being his children and acknowledged the profound impact he had on fans and colleagues.
"It has been, and forever will be, an honour and a privilege to be his daughters, and to have witnessed firsthand the impact both he and his work have had on so many."

Career highlights and legacy
Head rose to international fame in the late 1990s as Rupert Giles, the wise and nurturing mentor in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. His portrayal of the character earned him a devoted fanbase and critical acclaim.
Following Buffy, he took on memorable roles in Little Britain as the prime minister, Merlin as King Uther Pendragon, and Ted Lasso as Rupert Mannion, the antagonistic former owner of Richmond FC. His versatility extended to film, with appearances in The Iron Lady, Doctor Who, and Bridgerton.
In addition to his screen work, Head enjoyed a successful stage career, performing in productions of The Rocky Horror Show, Godspell, and Chess. He also became a familiar face in British households during the 1980s and 1990s as the star of Nescafé's iconic Gold Blend coffee advertisements.
Colleagues and fans pay tribute
Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Buffy Summers, led tributes on social media, sharing heartfelt memories of Head. In an Instagram post, she wrote, "Thank you to Daisy and Emily who not only shared their dad with me, but with the world." She included a poignant quote: "'Tell Giles I figured it out and I'm ok.' Well, I don't have it figured out and I'm not ok. But I know I'm the lucky one because I knew you."
David Boreanaz, another Buffy co-star, described Head as "so kind and generous of a soul," while James Marsters called him "an unflaggingly kind and steady presence" on set and "the best actor in the cast."
Matt Lucas, co-creator of Little Britain, recalled Head's warmth and brilliance, noting that the team had initially sought an actor "like Anthony Head" for the role of the prime minister, only to be delighted when Head himself agreed to take the part.
Personal life and final years
Born in Camden, London, in 1954, Head came from a family with deep ties to the entertainment industry. His mother, Helen Shingler, was an actress known for her role in the BBC series Maigret, and his father, Seafield Head, was a documentary maker. His brother, Murray Head, is also an actor.
Head trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and built a career spanning over five decades. He is survived by his daughters, Emily and Daisy, both of whom are actors, and his long-term partner, Sarah Fisher, who passed away in December 2025.
The actor's final credits included a guest role in Bridgerton in 2022 and a recurring part in BBC Radio 4's The Archers as Robin Fairbrother.
