Dubai police detain suspected Irish crime boss
Daniel Kinahan, a man in his 40s linked to an international organized crime network, was arrested in Dubai on Wednesday under an Irish court warrant, authorities confirmed.
Background and charges
The United States sanctioned Kinahan in April 2022, identifying him and his family as leaders of the Kinahan organized crime cartel. Irish courts have previously named him as the head of a drug trafficking operation.
Kinahan also had connections to professional boxing through MTK Global, a now-defunct management company that represented high-profile fighters such as Tyson Fury and Carl Frampton.
Arrest details
Dubai police stated the arrest followed intensive surveillance and search operations after receiving a judicial file from Irish authorities. The file outlined Kinahan's alleged crimes and his role in an international criminal syndicate.
Within 48 hours of the warrant's issuance by Dubai Public Prosecution, Kinahan was captured. The arrest is part of broader efforts to combat cross-border crime, according to officials.
International cooperation
Irish police (An Garda Síochána) confirmed awareness of the arrest, citing it as a key example of international law enforcement collaboration. The extradition process will proceed under a bilateral agreement between Ireland and the United Arab Emirates.
"Today's arrest is another extremely important demonstration of the need for international law enforcement co-operation in tackling transnational organised crime," An Garda Síochána said in a statement.
Political reactions
Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin acknowledged the arrest, highlighting the effectiveness of extradition arrangements with the UAE. "Due process will take its course," he added.
Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan welcomed the development, crediting "tireless work" by authorities. He noted the arrest followed his formal request for Kinahan's extradition to face charges in Ireland.
Kinahan's criminal history
Kinahan's name surfaced in Dublin's High Court as the alleged leader of a drug cartel. His criminal activities were further exposed during the Hutch-Kinahan feud, a violent conflict that has claimed 18 lives since 2016.
One notable incident occurred on February 5, 2016, at the Regency Hotel, where Kinahan was targeted in a shooting. His associate David Byrne was killed, and two others were injured.
After the attack, Kinahan reportedly relocated from Spain's Costa del Sol to Dubai, where he remained until his recent arrest.
