Teen sensation steps onto IPL stage as tournament begins
The Indian Premier League (IPL) kicks off Saturday, but all eyes are on Rajasthan Royals' 15-year-old batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who turns 15 Friday-just one day before his debut in the world's richest cricket league.
A prodigy emerges: From child sensation to record-breaking batter
Suryavanshi first captured attention at age 12, dominating bowlers twice his age with effortless strokeplay. Since then, his aggressive batting style, consistency, and hunger for big scores have drawn comparisons to cricket legend Garry Sobers.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) introduced minimum age rules in 2020, barring players under 15 from international cricket. Yet Suryavanshi's rapid rise has already shattered Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record as the youngest Indian to debut internationally at 16 years and 205 days.
Fast-tracked to stardom: A chance encounter that changed everything
Suryavanshi's breakthrough came unexpectedly in 2023. A washed-out Vinoo Mankad Trophy match in Chandigarh left selector Thilak Naidu with time to spare. Intrigued by rumors of a gifted young batter from Bihar, Naidu visited a nearby game-and witnessed Suryavanshi smash 86 off 76 balls to lead Bihar past Assam.
Convinced by his talent, Naidu fast-tracked Suryavanshi after consulting VVS Laxman, then head of the BCCI's Centre of Excellence. The teenager quickly proved his mettle, excelling in the Under-19 Challenger Trophy and a quadrangular series against England and Bangladesh in late 2023.
Dominance at every level: From youth Tests to IPL glory
Suryavanshi's defining moment came in October 2024, when he blasted a 58-ball century against Australia in a youth Test. Critics argued the IPL might be too soon, but he silenced doubts in the 2025 season, launching the first ball he faced-a delivery from Shardul Thakur-for six.
Weeks later, he became the youngest centurion in senior competitive cricket, smashing a 35-ball hundred against Gujarat Titans. The Rajasthan Royals' $130,000 investment in the then-13-year-old had paid off.
Under-19 World Cup heroics: A performance for the ages
India's strict new approach to the Under-19 World Cup-one shot, no age fraud-set the stage for Suryavanshi's finest hour. He scored 72, 40, 52, and 30 in the league phase, then delivered a 33-ball 68 in the semifinal against Afghanistan.
In the final against England, he produced an unforgettable innings: 175 off just 80 balls, including 15 sixes and 15 fours. The performance left ex-cricketers in awe.
"How good were Sachin Tendulkar or Virat Kohli at that age? If this guy is that good this early, there's no reason he can't be playing four-day cricket."
Ravi Shastri
"Mature for his age."
AB de Villiers
"A moment of inspiration for young dreamers across all sports."
Matthew Hayden
A turning point for Indian cricket?
Suryavanshi's fearless approach has drawn praise from legends like Tendulkar, who highlighted his bat speed and ability to pick length early. With the ICC's age rules the only barrier to his senior debut, the question is no longer whether he's ready-but whether the world is.
His IPL debut on Saturday carries echoes of another historic moment: March 27, 1994, when a 17-year-old Tendulkar was promoted to open for India in an ODI against New Zealand. That innings-82 off 49 balls-launched Tendulkar's legendary career.
Thirty-two years later, Suryavanshi stands on the brink of rewriting history once again.
